Georgia

Georgia’s uninsured rate was at 13.4% as of 2019, a tally of nearly 1.4 million people. That’s according to a report from the Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF). The nonprofit looked at the uninsured rate again in 2021 and found that of the people who still don’t have health insurance, around 711,600 of them could qualify for marketplace coverage.

Marketplace health insurance is the kind that adheres to the Affordable Care Act (ACA), the country’s current healthcare law. That law ensures protections for consumers, guarantees coverage for pre-existing conditions and requires marketplace plans to cover 10 essential health benefits.

The law also offers tax credits to people earning between 100% and 400% of the federal poverty level. These credits, also known as premium subsidies, help make health insurance more affordable for people with moderate to low incomes.

In 2021, about 35% of the people who qualify for marketplace plans in Georgia but don’t have one could get a bronze plan for free (no premium) with a tax credit. Nationwide, most people qualify for this financial help.

KFF calculated the average cost of health insurance in 2021 in Georgia and found that the lowest price averages based on metal tier were $348 for bronze plans, $443 for silver ones and $463 for gold plans. These averages don’t take into account the tax subsidies that might drop the price tag.

People who qualify for tax credits can save money on premiums. Using our own data on our marketplace, we estimate that a 40-year-old living in Savannah and earning $37,000 a year might get a bronze plan for $183.79 a month thanks to subsidies.

Of course, cost and coverage options vary based on where you live. There are at least 6 insurers in Georgia in 2021. Peach State health insurance companies include, among others, Anthem, Oscar, Kaiser Permanente (not affiliated with the nonprofit) and Centene.
